Abstract

Terra Preta resulted from long-term addition of high amounts of charcoal (biochar) and organic residues, which were decomposed in-situ by soil microorganisms. The existence of Terra Preta proves that it is principally possible to sustainably increase carbon sequestration and soil fertility while intensively using the soil for horti- and agriculture. Transferring this principle to our modern society would enable us to sustainably using our natural resources and closing anthropogenic nutrient cycles. In addition, biochar can be used for at least 55 further purposes such as animal feed, construction material, or separating toilets reducing the smell considerably.
