In microscopic pictures, algal cells can be counted and distinguished by using computer programmes. The evaluation is possible with basic equipment and a freely available open-source software (CellProfiler). The number of cells can be determined with an accuracy of 5–10 per cent. Such a project can be done by pupils or students as an internship. Industrially, this method allows for a quick and reliable assessment of the stock and growth of algae cultures at any cell density and of any species. In this way cells in co-cultures can be distinguished. Thus, the stock of individual co-partners can be tracked, enabling the detection and correction of potential imbalances.
